Public Square Debate: Is Social Media a Threat to Democracy?
March 25, 2026
5:30-7:30 p.m.
VCU - Rodney's at the Shafer Dining Court, Room 227 (810 Cathedral Place)
VCU is joining together with Brightpoint Community College and Reynolds Community College as well as select Richmond-area high schools to hold another event in the Public Square series. These events are taking place around Virginia this year as we commemorate 250 years of U.S. independence. Using the Braver Angels debate format, Public Square debates invite diverse voices into a shared space—where the goal isn’t to win, but to understand. They help participants explore what it means to live in a democracy—and what it takes to strengthen one.
Join us for a wide-ranging discussion on Resolved: Social media is a threat to democracy.

4:30-6:00 p.m.
Center Street Grill (5101 Center St)
If you haven’t come to one of our Williamsburg meet-ups, you’re missing out on some fun cross-partisan conversations. (Not an ounce of food has been thrown yet!) Sometimes we talk about the news of the day; sometimes we talk about our hobbies and pets. Join us this month for another evening of casual talk and refreshments (pay as you go). All that's required is a willingness to abide by the Braver Angels Way.
Please RSVP to help us keep track of numbers and notify people in the event of any changes.
Red/Blue Workshop
May 30, 2026
10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. (lunch provided)
Cochrane Rockville Branch Library (16600 Pouncey Tract Rd)
The Red/Blue workshop brings together a small, evenly divided group of conservatives (Reds) and liberals (Blues) for a series of exercises designed to help participants clarify disagreements, reduce stereotyped thinking, and discover common values.
Goals
Learn about the experiences, feelings, and beliefs of those on the other side of the political divide.
Discover areas of commonality in addition to differences.
Gain insights that might be helpful to others in helping to depolarize our community and the nation.
Each workshop will include 5-8 conservatives (Reds) and 5-8 liberals (Blues). Up to 20 people are welcome to observe. Independents are also welcome to attend, but we ask that for the purposes of the workshop they identify as leaning either Red or Blue, or attend as observers.
This is not a complete list. Visit braverangels.org/events to see all events being offered by Braver Angels National and other alliances around the country. Most national events are recorded and made available on the Braver Angels YouTube channel within a few days.
National Workshop: Skills for Disagreeing Better
March 14, 2026
2:00-3:45 p.m. (ET)
In this polarized time, we lack basic understanding of why people on the other political side hold their beliefs. We don’t see them as they see themselves–their core values and central concerns–but instead as we choose to see them. We are tempted to regard our own side as principled and the other side as self-interested. When we try to communicate across this gap, we often lack the skills for listening carefully, looking for common ground, and sharing our perspectives in ways that connect rather than create more misunderstanding. We can learn to disagree better in polarized times, which means accurately seeing where we differ and where we share common ground.
In this free workshop, you will gain:
More understanding of the values and concerns of people who differ from you politically
Better skills for listening in a way so that the other person feels heard
Better skills for sharing viewpoints in a way the other person might hear -- even if they disagree
National Film Club Discussion: One Battle After Another
March 19, 2026
8:00-9:30 p.m. (ET)
Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, now nominated for 13 Oscars, has taken America by storm. Inspired by Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, the film tells the story of the left-wing radical group The French 75 and their mission to stop deportation efforts and bring down the right-wing government. But things get... complicated... between Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw and French 75-member Perfidia Beverly Hills, resulting in a power struggle entangled in politics, race, and desire that will last for decades.
This action-packed epic satirizes modern America in a thrill ride that'll keep you on the edge of your seat, refusing to play it safe. And yet, at the heart of it is a story about love and family, and the importance of choosing love in a divided, violent time. Featuring knockout performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and more, One Battle After Another has already made its mark in the history books. Come discuss it with us and let us know what you think. Be sure to watch the film before we meet on Zoom to discuss it!
One Battle After Another is Rated R for pervasive language, violence, sexual content, and drug use.
Note: This is not a film screening. One Battle After Another can be seen in theaters, on HBO Max, or rented on VOD (Apple, Amazon, Youtube, etc.)
National Workshop: Depolarizing Within
March 21, 2026
2:00-5:00 p.m. (ET)
Polarization can be driven by how we talk with like-minded people about those on the other side. Too often, we stereotype, dismiss, or ridicule our fellow citizens who support the other political party, its leaders, and its policies.
This free 3-hour workshop is offered online over Zoom and teaches participants:
How to be more aware of their own "inner polarizer"
How to be critical without demonizing, dismissing or stereotyping large swaths of the population
How to constructively intervene in polarizing social conversations with like-minded people
National Workshop: Families & Politics
March 28, 2026
2:00-5:00 p.m. (ET)
Family relationships can become casualties of a toxic political environment. Family members are having bitter political arguments, avoiding each other, or even cutting off lifetime relationships. If you want to preserve important family bonds while still being true to your values and political beliefs, this free workshop will offer you:
Insight into why family differences over politics are uniquely challenging
Recognition of common roles that family members play in political conversations
Strategies and skills for handling family political differences in a constructive way
Although the focus is on family relationships, you can use learnings in this workshop with any loved one. You’ll laugh and have some fun in this workshop—it won’t be all serious. After all, we all come from quirky families.
